23rd March
The fishing has been a bit patchy as it always is this time of year. We have been getting a few cod and Pollock but as the water is still very cold the makerel and bass have yet to show. Fingers crossed and it should improve very soon

With the excesses of the festive season behind I did a trip for 5 on Sunday. We were lucky to get 15 cod although no lunkers the biggest going 71/2 lb. The whiting seem to have gone so we were pleased with this haul. The next trip will be a wrecking trip as I have heard the pollock and cod have moved in on the inshore wrecks.
Inshore Congers
Fishing just a mile off shore we are getting congers on rough ground up to 50lb. Here we see young Ben being helped by his dad to capture his first large eel. The colder water has also brought a spate of large channels and cod upto 11lb but the lunkers have yet to make their appearance close inshore. The weather is still beating us most days and I am looking forward to getting out more than 1 mile to do some serious fishing!

Plaice galore
After quite a few sorties this summer we at last managed to find a few decent size plaice on the Tuesday. In a total of 15, we had four over 4 lb and all in prime condition. We also had one nice cod . This wasn’t bad for 3 hours fishing as I had wasted 2 hours trying to get congers from a normally realiable spot. Despite the freezing day the water was still quite warm hence we also caught a few nice makerel. Yesterday we had a nice 8lb bass close to beachy head but not much else . The tide close to the headland was fearsome and 2 lb of lead was hardly enough. However we did end up with some sizeable whiting but no cod. Cest la Vie

The inshore winter cod fishing has now started, as well as a run of channel whiting up to 3lb. We are also still getting bass, plaice and pollock, so a mixed bag is the order of the day. Unusual species are also more prevalent as we had another john dory and red mullet. The cod are not lunkers yet (11lb) as the pictures show, but are in very good condition and we will be getting the larger fish in close to spawn very soon.
My aplologies to Andy and his Latvian friends as my phone was on video when I took their picture on Friday. Anyway congratulations to him for getting 5 cod in a total bag of 17. If you want to go fishing I have lots of midweek dates but the first weekend date is the 2/11. Brian

The top picture shows what happens when a large conger outwits a fisherman with a large hook. The Pout was safely dissected and the conger was never seen! The weather was good so we were able to go to the deep hole (270ft) to get some cod as well as several other congers. Note the unusual calm sea
Saturday
This picture below shows me on the right with a prize winning 17lb cod and John with a nice 10lb cod. Note that the flag shows the end of the calm weather. The large time gap between my posts indicate how many trips were cancelled this month! I have spaces this Thursday and Friday and gues what we might see some high pressure.

The weather proves to be awful with lots of trips cancelled or postponed. However we were able to get out on Sunday 13th and we caught 12 nice cod with some doggies, pollock and gurnards plus tons of mackerel. We also tried drifting for plaice but they are proving elusive this year. The heady days of 60/70 a day seem to be well over.
Where has the summer gone I still havent had chance to get out the on board barbecue yet!. NB If you look close you can see Beachy Head in the Background. Some mid week dates are still free in August.
